Madoka Kaname and her best friend Sayaka Miki are regular high school girls in the city of Mitakihara. But one day, they encounter a cat-like creature named Kyubey who says he can grant one wish to each of them, and in return, they become magical girls and fight against witches. A veteran magical girl in the area named Mami Tomoe decides to show them how to hunt witches, while a mysterious transfer student named Homura Akemi warns them not to make a contract with Kyubey without giving a reason.
